Royal Canadian Mint 2008

New for 2008, RCM brings you the coolest coin ever. Enter Joe Moose

Well, it is made for kids and I can see the fun in that but there should be limits. Money should retain a sense of nobility and serious purpose.

New RCM designs have pathetic in the last 20 years and I can't help but think it's deliberately trying to undermine respect for cash.

You missed that one by a bit. That was the 1973 quarter. But nowhere near as fun as the 2004 Bullwinkle moose

There may have not been a more beautiful Canadian coin since the 1979 silver dollar, in my opinion.

The only positive is that getting kids interested in numismatics at a young age benefits all collectors. Kids aren't going to be as interested in the key date coins as they are in the shiny proof offerings or the more fun coloured coins.

Re: Royal Canadian Mint 2008

It is interesting that the canadian quarters are already made of nickel plated steel. When Congress was hearing testimony from the mint a few weeks ago, steel was one of the suggested metals to be used in our penny. This trend will only continue, until the face value of all coins are more than their face, and paper dollars are literally worth less than its material..

Ever since they put the queen on their coins (the one that looks like Ronald McDonald) they went downhill as far as design goes.

Lighting, it's all in the lighting.

I did get an offer from one big group to be a staff photog but I would have had to relocate.

I'd prefer that over some of this shit the US Mint puts out...like the HIDEOUS "presidential dollars."

If it gets kids interested in coins, I'll let Joe Moose slide. :bear_w00t:

Like THIS baby-shit colored series is "noble" or "serious." I almost puked, then laughed, when I first saw one:

One face of the .99999 Gold Maple is the most beautiful coin ever produced by the RCM. Unfortunately, there's an ugly bitch on the other side.

What's sad is that they are ALL ugly.

Think about it - has the US Mint really produced a "beautiful" coin in modern days? SAEs and GAEs do NOT count, since they are based on decades old (actually century-old design, in the latter case) of the Walking Liberty half and St. Gaudens DE.

Here's the deal on those:

The obverse is based on a decades-old design. The reverses are based on designs submitted BY THE STATES. So, let me clarify: has the US Mint independently produced a truly beautiful coin for decades?

Simple Canadian Quarter Led To Huge U.S. Spy Warning

Now it can be told - the secret weapon Canada was using to spy on the U.S. was: a quarter! A special 25-cent piece has been revealed as being the catalyst that sparked American army contractors to issue a top secret espionage memo about nano-technology being used for nefarious intelligence purposes.
That moose coin is such a disgrace I may even look forward to our new Amero such as this design with IsisRaEls. Isis sitting on a Masonic tomb (Mecca, Ka?) of Liberty after having used force to conquer the world. :bear_w00t: http://www.designscomputed.com/coins/amero.html

That is very nice, so I guess I stand corrected. Wish it were a circulating coin or a true bullion coin (with weight and purity on it).

Though I don't consider them to be in the jaw dropping level of nice, I think the new nickel designs are nice. I agree with your original premise to the extent that
you can get old waiting for really nice new designs from the US Mint. The
new presidential dollar design is close to a complete punt.
